The start of spring in Ohio ushers in warmer temperatures, a fresh breeze blowing through the house, more sunlight, and the ability to work outside without freezing. For most homeowners, springtime is a season to deep clean inside the house to get rid of all that accumulated junk.
But while spring cleaning inside the house takes place, cleaning outside of the house is often passed over–especially in certain areas. One area that is most often forgotten? The roof.
Add Your Roof To The Spring Cleaning List
After the harsh and bipolar winter months that are common here in Ohio, it’s important to remember that your roof needs to be properly cared for and checked on a regular basis. So while you’re cleaning out your garage and planning out your garden in the spring, make sure you take some time to give your roof a once-over as well.
- Clean The Gutters – Even if you thoroughly cleaned your gutters after the very last leaf hit the ground during the fall, chances are there is still going to be debris in them now, which could cause the gutters to get clogged. If your gutters aren’t draining properly, your shingles, siding, and soffits are more susceptible to damage, which can cause roof leaks and further damage.
- Missing Granules – While you’re up there cleaning the gutters, take a look at your roof and see if there’s an excessive amount of granules missing. As we mentioned in one of our previous blogs, missing granules can be a telltale sign that you may need to replace your roof, and are indicative that your roof is losing its weatherproofing qualities.
- Check Shingle Condition – Midwest winters can be tough on your roof. Spring is a great time to check on the condition of the shingles, and it’s especially important to note if there are any shingles that are missing. Any curled or missing shingles lessen the protection that your roof is providing.
- Trim Those Branches – Be on the lookout for overhanging branches or overgrown vegetation from nearby trees and other plants. Branches can end up damaging your roof over time, plus overgrown vegetation adds to the potential gutter clogging possibilities throughout the year.
As you and your family start enjoying the nicer spring weather and complete items off of those spring-cleaning checklists, make sure your roof is part of the process. Also, now is a great time to have a professional check over your roof and ensure that you and your family will remain safe and protected throughout the year.
