Asphalt shingles are some of the most popular roof products, in fact, over 80% of home re-roofing projects use the material. While these shingles uphold a lot of popularity, we want to address some of the most common misconceptions held against this material.
5 Common Myths Surrounding Asphalt Roofs
Below are some of the most common myths that have popped up regarding asphalt roofs:
- MYTH #1: Cooling costs will be higher with asphalt roofs. While it is true that darker-colored shingles will attract and retain more heat from the sun, this will not raise your home cooling costs by much. Improper ventilation will have a much better effect on your in-home temperature costs.
- MYTH #2: Asphalt shingles immediately start losing granules after installation. After new roof installation, you should expect to see some loose granules in the first few days or weeks, but this is normal. Granules may loosen here and there during the installation process of a new roof, however, large amounts of missing granules-like balding may indicate improper installation or defective shingles from the manufacturer. In that case, call your contractor as soon as possible.
- MYTH #3: Asphalt shingles contain asbestos. This was true 60+ years ago, but asbestos has been phased out of the production process since then. If your roof was installed in the 1960s or earlier, and you suspect it contains asbestos, it would be best to contact a professional for an inspection. Let’s be honest, if your roof was installed in the 1960s or earlier, it’s time to get a new roof.
- MYTH #4: It’s easier to ” Do it yourself ” with asphalt shingles. A “Do It Yourself” job is NOT easier unless you have the experience, materials, and tools. “Do it yourself ” expert or not, you or risk voiding the extended warranties and affecting home insurance coverage. It is best to call the professionals for proper inspection and installation.
- MYTH #5: The sealant on asphalt shingles works immediately. The sealant on most asphalt roofs provides extra protection against high winds, but it takes time and heat from the sun to properly cure before it starts working. Once the installation is complete the sealant should only take a few days to reach peak performance, some seal down in hours depending on the outside temperature!
